My personal saddle.
I made this saddle in Uruguay, in "Las Nazarenas" saddlery, as sample for a production never started. I rode a long with it, but now it's just a part of furniture in my home.

I wish I knew how to make saddles, I know it's just a case of enrolling in a course but I don't think I'll ever get around to it. Top rate job by the way;).

PS If wood works in your gallery are made by you, you don't have hands quality problem :-)

:-) thanks.
I learned to make saddles on my own. Reading books, try a lot and good hands are the necessary.
About saddles to be a good rider help a lot in their design. Be a good leather craftsman is not enough ;-)

I have a book about saddlery but in does not show the armature (the tree I think it's called) on to which the leather sections are attached. I you were to ever consider making a tutorial I'd very much like to know how to make one:).
Yes all the wooden works in my gallery were done by me so I do have great faith in my hands. It's just I never like spending time on such a project without knowing I'm doing it correctly.

I wrote a book about saddlery, but it's not related to making saddles, more about their classification.
Write a tutorial? Maybe, I have many photos of WIP, but make a good tutorial require long time and now I don't have it. I can go to look my books and reply here the title and the author.
About tree (it's the right name :-) ) don't try to make it at the beginning, buy it. Superior Saddle Tree Co. were the ones I used, but also other firm can be good. Use wooden ones covered in rawhide.

What was the title of your book? I wouldn't mind seeing if I can find a copy:).
I understand what you mean, tutorials do take a lot of time to make anything useful particularly for a project as complex as a saddle.
I'll look into the Superior Saddle Tree Co.. Lastly thank you very much for your advice;).

It's in Italian ;-) I don't think you can find it in Australia.
Anyway since it's not more published I plan to put it on web for free download. I need to find original files and convert in PDF. It's old ones and I need time for look in old archives.
The title is "La Selleria" a link to Amazon [link] for one used book. It's also available here [link] :-)

I finally found some book in my library (it's really big and messy)
I list here just some book about saddles making and not the ones related to general leather working.
"The Harness Makers illustrated manual" W. N. Fitz.Gerald
"Wstern saddle making" and "Advanced Western saddle making" Robin Yates
"The Stohlman Encyclopedia of saddle making" All Stohtman
"Le livret du bourrelier-sellier harnacheur" P. Leurot (in Franch)
"Saddlery and Harness Making" Paul H. Hasluck
"To handmade a saddle" J. H. L. Shields
"Braiding rawhide Horse Tack" Robert L. Woolery (about tack making not specifically for saddles)
"Trenzas Gauchas" Lopez Osornio (about tack making not specifically for saddles)
I have also some "modules" of Uruguay Education Ministry made for local school.
